Dr. Norman H. Burton (shown here
in 1935) was an optometrist. He held a Doctor of
Optometry degree awarded by Columbia University in New York City.
During his professional career which spanned the 1920-50s he was, as an optometrist, tagged, by the American Medical Association,
as being a "cultist." To add to this stigma ophthalmologists
were instructed that they could not "ethically" refer patients to
optometrists. The fact that many did, despite this prohibition, was
always a source
of great pride to Dr. Burton throughout his life. |
