An Example of Diagnostic Coding

In the field of spine care one of the most difficult and expensive management challenges is the patient with a chronic pain syndrome.  The rehabilitation of such a patient requires the services of a team of trained professionals.  Under the International Committee for Diagnosis (ICD) coding (Version 9) there is not a diagnosis for the "chronic pain syndrome" (or regional complex pain disorder).  The closest possible match is that for "Low Back Pain", a common problem afflicting about 80% of the population with transient incapacitation during their lifetime.  There could not possibly be 2 more disparate diagnoses in spine care.  When garbage goes in, garbage goes out.
